Creating Volumes

Before you create a volume, make sure you first set up your cloud provider to work with HPE CV.

To create a HPE CV Volume, complete the following steps:

  1. Click Block Volumes in the HPE CV main menu, and then click New Volume.
  2. Enter all required volume settings in the volume creation wizard.

Tip: Consider automating cloud information retrieval to make it even easier to enter volume settings in the volume creation wizard

  3. When you have completed the volume creation wizard, click Create Volume. The newly created volume appears in the Cloud Volumes window, as shown in the following example:

Important: After you create your first volume, you must configure your cloud provider to use HPE CV.

The following table provides guidelines for specifying volume settings in the volume creation wizard:

Volume Setting Guideline
Cloud Account The account you created when you registered your cloud provider with HPE Cloud Volumes.
Region The geographic location in which the data center resides. Note that for Google Cloud Platform accounts, you must use the same region that is used for HPE CV
Cloud Network The network setting fields that appear in the wizard change based on the cloud provider you are using and on whether you have enabled HPE CV to automatically retrieve cloud data from your cloud provider. For example, if you have enabled automation, then you can select your network settings from the Cloud Network drop down list.
If you have not enabled automation, then you must manually enter your network settings. For example, if you are using AWS, then you must manually enter a VPC ID and CIDR (which can be found under the Networking and Content Delivery section of the AWS Management Console.) If you are using Azure, then you must manually enter a VNet, CIDR, and Resource Group (which can be found in the Azure portal.).
Peered Subnet This field appears when you create a volume for Google Cloud Platform. You can select an existing subset from the drop-down menu or you can click Generate subset from the drop-down menu to create a new subset.
VPC ID This field appears when you create a volume for Google Cloud Platform. Use the VPC ID that you created when you Set Up Google Platform for HPE CV.
CIDR This field appears when you create a volume using Google Cloud Platform. Use the CIDR that you created when you Set Up Google Platform for HPE CV.
Volume Name Choose any name that is meaningful to you.
Size Select a volume size from a minimum of 1GB up to a maximum of 16TB.
IOPS Select an IOPS setting from a minimum of 300 IOPS to a maximum of 20,000 IOPS.
Cloud Application Select an application that most closely matches the software that you plan to run on the volume. The application that you select optimizes the performance settings for that and similar applications. Select Other if there is no application that closely matches the type of software that you plan to run.
Volume Type Select General Purpose Flash for a performance SLA that is greater than 95%. Select Premium Flash for a performance SLA that is greater than 99% .
Snapshot Schedule You can schedule snapshots to be taken hourly, daily, twice daily, weekly, or monthly. Select none to elect not to have snapshots taken.
Scheduled Snapshots to Retain This setting represents the number of days for which snapshots are kept. For example, if you elect to have a daily snapshot schedule with a retention policy of 7, after the 8th day, the 1st snapshot in the sequence will be discarded.
Encryption You can enable encryption to encrypt data at rest using 256 Bit AES encryption. The encryption keys that are used in the encryption are managed by HPE Nimble Storage. Note that data shredding is not currently available.

After you create a volume, click the volume to display volume details and to attach and connect the volume to a cloud VM.
